The Biomedical Sciences Department of School of Health Sciences of the International Hellenic University-IHU (formerly known as Alexandreio Technological Educational Institute) is a public University offering both a BSc in Biomedical Sciences (4-year course) and a Master of Science course, named “Biomedical and Molecular Sciences: Diagnosis and Treatment”, in cooperation with the Medical School of Democritus University, Thrace.
To earn a Bachelor’s of Science in Biomedical Sciences, students must initially achieve a high score in Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Modern Greek language (15000 minimum out of 20000) in national examinations after high school and lyceum graduation, in order to qualify for acceptance into the program. The degree is awarded upon completion of the university’s didactic and clinical program.
Our program offers courses in the biomedical sciences, including anatomy, physiology, histology, cytology, biology, molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, clinical chemistry, microbiology, clinical microbiology, immunology, mycology, virology, Hygiene, parasitology, biotechnology, hematology, blood transfusion, pathology. As the courses progress, increasing emphasis is placed on scientific research, as students obtain first-hand experience of laboratory research in the later stages. Students choose their own diploma thesis and the possible areas for investigation within the University are wide ranging. Our program also offers to our students a six-month traineeship in the laboratories of Public Hospitals, private Diagnostic Laboratories or Research Institutions.
With the completion of the courses of studies, graduates of the Department of Biomedical Sciences acquire the essential scientific and technological skills and knowledge in order to work as Biomedical Scientists in Medical Laboratory Sector and in other areas related to their studies. They are highly qualified for entry into the technical work force in the biotechnology and/or pharmaceutical industry, as well as to support academic research endeavors in federally funded research programs. There are approximately 800 students enrolled in the department’s undergraduate major in Biomedical Sciences. The Biomedical Sciences department of IHU has an ongoing interest in multinational cooperation both for student and academics participating in different Erasmus and other international Programs.
Our MSc program “Biomedical and Molecular Sciences: Diagnosis and Treatment” in cooperation with the Medical School of Democritus University, Thrace is limited access requiring a separate application and acceptance. The program offers extensive student laboratory sessions in highly technical student laboratories both in our Department in Sindos, Thessaloniki as well as in Medical School in Alexandroupoli, Thrace.
